Dramatic Events: How to Run a Successful Workshop
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (May, 2000)
Authors: Richard Hahlo and Peter Reynolds
Average review score:

Great Resource for Directors in Classical Theater
Dramatic Events is an excellent resource for play directors and teachers of drama. Actors and playwrights will also find its insights useful. From easy-to-understand basics of how to read and speak Shakespearean verse to the more obscure requirements of working with masks and choral speaking, it is full of well-researched examples of how to solve the problems of classical texts. It is especially useful to American actors and directors, who typically do not receive as much training in the technical aspects of Shakespeare and Greek plays as acting students in Britain. It could be an excellent adjunct text for those teaching or studying advanced Linklaetter voice work.

A Great Resource
This books takes you through the author's experience step by step of running several forms of acting/drama workshops. It takes you from warm-up exercises through different performance goals. I found the book very helpful in developing my own improv/acting workshops.

Earthship: Systems and Components

Amazing Concepts - Amazing Book!
Michael Reynolds definately walks the walk. I first heard of Earthships several years ago, but didn't give it much thought until, driving just beyond the Rio Grande Gorge outside of Taos, I saw a collection of them. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. What Michael has done, first publicized to my knowledge in this book, has been astonishing.

The book talks about his concept of the Earthship, how to build them, how they work, and how you, too can live virtually independant of the large grid of services available to you, and that in many ways makes you work for the system itself!

This book of ideas has evolved and been thoroughly vetted in real life in 3 developments around Taos and countless other places in the world (mostly in the Western US) -- so it is a lot less experimental than you might think. The novelty mostly resides with our unfamiliarity with the Earthship.

The structures are partially buried, with load bearing walls made of earth rammed old tyres, non load bearing walls built of cans, with greywater systems supported by rain catchwater. PV and wind powered, with food and other plants grown in the house, the premise is as close to total self sufficiency as one might be able to get. Philosophically, nearly a perfect experssion of that desire. Practically, it seems to deliver, which sets itself apart from many other building methods and philosophies.

In this age of unreliable utilities, uncertain prices of fuels, corrupt business leaders, bankrupt corporations and politics bought and paid for by institutions whose motives are quentionable, such a book and underlying philosphy seems relevant like no other time similar except the early 1970's.

To some, this book of building a low cost shelter might help someone get into a nice house where they might not have otherwise, to others this might be a manifasto, still others might have the engineering appeal strike the most resonant cord.

Either way, this is a MUST HAVE for at leats my bookshelf. I went ahead and got #2 and #3 as well!

You'll want all the books in this series
I went to Taos and toured some of the "Earth Ship" houses, and they were wonderful. I bought the books there and read them cover to cover (on the way home). These books are full of good, practical, information. If you have access to old tires, empty cans, clay mud, you could build your own house. I haven't done a house yet, but I've done some other interesting projects using these principles. This particular book deal most with the parts of an Earth Ship house and how they all work together. It has more how to information than the others, I thought.

An Edge in My Voice

Great Ellison non-fiction
For those of you who only know Harlan Ellison from his fiction, you'll enjoy this collection of essays written for the LA "Weekly" newspaper. A very eclectic collection of subjects, from critiques of local restaurants, to an emotional account of his early life, to a hilarious recounting of pranks he's pulled.

Seldom have I been as engaged by a writer's views as I was with Ellsion. I found myself engaged in a mental debate with Ellison on many issues. Don't miss out on this book!

Ethics in Counseling and Psychotherapy: Standards, Research, and Emerging Issues
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (01 August, 2001)
Author: Elizabeth Reynolds Welfel
Average review score:

Dr. Welfel is the "Grand Dame" of Ethics in Counseling.
Dr. Welfel has devoted her career to the study of ethics in the helping profession. This text is the accumulated wisdom of her years of practical experience, research, as well as the experience and research of her peers.

After reading this textbook you can rest assured that you have received a comprehensive look at ethics. You'll come away shocked at how ethics drives our every move as counselors, and you'll have a greater appreciation and respect for ethical decision making. The "10 Point Model for Ethical Decision Making" is worth the price of the book.

While no text, code of ethics or any such compilation can provide the answers to every decision you will ever face, this book can provide guidance that will serve you well.

One of the few textbooks I intend to keep and not re-sell. A masterpiece.

An insightful guide to ethical decision making.
Elizabeth Reynolds Welfel has written an insightful and informative guide to ethical decision making for anyone in the helping professions. She presents her material in a clear and easily readable form. It is obvious that Dr. Welfel is an expert in the field and her vast knowledge of the research on ethical behavior is evident. Her nine-step model of ethical decision making is a clear blueprint for helping counselors and psychologists make informed and thoughtful ethical decisions. I have used this text to help my counseling students develop an understanding of the ethical standards and underlying principles of the counseling profession and I plan to continue to use it in the future. I highly recommend this book for anyone teaching in counselor or psychologist education, as well as for any mental health professional.

The GIFT OF THE CROCODILE : A Cinderella Story
Published in School & Library Binding by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing (November, 2000)
Authors: Judy Sierra and Reynold Ruffins
Average review score:

Spice
This Indonesian version of Cinderella hails from the Moluccas, or Spice Islands--the place to which Christopher Columbus was headed when he found the New World. In 1492 they were the only place in the world where cloves grew. The earliest written version of Cinderella is from China. As the author indicates in the afterward, no one knows where the story originated. But she speculates that Cinderella may have traveled West with the spices.

Damura was a child when her mother taught her to light a fire, cook, and to tend and harvest rice. But she still loved dolls when her mother died. The lorikeet and little green parrot outside in the nutmeg tree were not company enough for her. With a new doll, a neighboring widow bribed Damura into convincing her father to marry her. Her stepmother's two daughters were kind at first, but soon made Damura their servant. She cried at night that she had traded her happiness for a doll.

One day as she washed the family's clothes, she lost her sarong in the river. She called to the creatures of the wild for help, and a crocodile appeared. "Good morning Grandmother," she said to the crocodile.

The crocodile gave Damura her baby to care for, and returned with a silver sarong that sparkled like the night sky. She told Damura to take it and come to the river again if she ever needed anything.

Her stepsisters were naturally jealous of the sarong. But when they tried to entice the crocodile to help them, she saw through their façade. A year later, the village buzzed with excitement as the prince planned to hold a dance to choose his bride. Damura asked her stepmother if she might go, wearing her silver sarong. Of course her stepmother refused her.

The rest of this tale is very similar to that of Cinderella. But to find the unique ways in which it sparkles, you'll have to read this book. Alyssa A. Lappen

A fresh new spin on the cinderella stry
I Have never read such an interesting version of the cinderella story, i recomend that every one with children or who know those who have them buy this book and save it. It will provide pleasure to generations to come

Global Logic: The Challenge of Globalisation for Southeast Asian Busines
Published in Paperback by Pearson Education Asia Pte., Ltd. (June, 2002)
Author: Christopher Reynolds
Average review score:

Logic and Economic Development
If you have ever speculated that governments are largely irrelevant and that corporations really run the world, you're right! Money does make the world go around.

Dr Christopher Reynolds in his dense (but readable) book "Global Logic; the Challenge of Globalisation for Southeast Asian Business" explains the Asian economic crisis of 1997-1998 and offers highly cogent suggestions of how the economic interests of Southeast Asia might improve their lot using organic, culturally sensitive strategies. His research is well supported by statistical analysis and the text is organized and concise. The glossary of acronyms in the front of the book was a boon - I found myself referring to it frequently. Some of the implication of Global Logic are slightly distressing; that the global economy is a house of cards largely built on speculation, not on product, save for rapidly diminishing natural resources. Other implications are reassuring; we are in transition from an era dominated by industry to one governed by the brokering of information. Why shouldn't Sri Lanka lead the world in software technology?

Although Global Logic was written to address the problems and possibilities of Southeast Asia, there are also connotations for the rest of the developing world. With the prospect of a new Cold War looming large over the Middle East, the suggestions presented in Global Logic for establishing a balance of trade and financial interdependence, indeed economic self-determination, might make the difference for a developing nation on the brink of being marginalized. This would also apply to the nations of Africa and to the Eastern Block states. A must-read for anyone interested in economics or development.

-Jane Mc Manigill

Enable me to understand more about Asian business landscape
This book enables me to understand more about the Asian business landscape. I was told that Globalization is a buzzword in the Asian countries and I read a lot about what globalization is and how Asian companies should go globalize from newspapers and periodicals. The beauty of this book is that it goes into depth on how companies should response to globalization and what are the challenges that the Asian companies would face in the midst of globalization. If you are business owner or executive who is keen to start your business in the Asian countries or a student studying business strategies, this book is certainly a must have!

Glory Days

an ex-player must
This is the second Bill Reynolds book that I have read. Loved them both. I found his descriptions taking me back to high school and the playground. It brought back a lot of memories and also made me think about how I prioritized basketball for so many years.

Non basketball junkies may call Bill's live experiences crazy. I dream of some of his experiences. Great book!

An engaging personal memoir of interest to all ex-jocks.
Bill Reynolds is certainly one of America's finest sports journalists. "Glory Days" addsto that luster. While some may dismiss it as a purely personal account of one's growing up, it is a lot more. It is a book to be read and enjoyed by all former star athletes, high school or college, who realized at some subsequent point in their life that they had to move on but did not want to let go of the one thing that they had worked at while growing up A disclaimer: Bill was a fraternity brother of mine at Brown.

Han Sorya and North Korean Literature: The Failure of Socialist Realism in Dprk (Cornell East Asia Series, 69)
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ (January, 1994)
Author: Brian Reynolds Myers
Average review score:

fascinating
I was looking for a book which goes beyond the usual cliches about North Korea, so although I wasn't that interested in literature I bought this book. It provides a fascinating look at a North Korea that I hadn't known existed. We all tend to think that the personality cult kicked in right after 1945, but this book shows that it developed over time, with literary figures like Han Sorya playing a large role in developing what Myers calls the "iconography" of the personality cult. The book is also entertaining, since it describes the various factional struggles inside the literary scene. The analysis of Han's novels is very wittily done. After reading this book, I felt that I knew the North Korea of the forties and fifties.

not just for literary historians
This is really the only study of North Korean culture in English, but it is also indispensable for historians and political scientists. Myers' explanation of the DPRK's glorification of spontaneous impulses/rages etc goes a long way towards explaining that country's long list of idiotically self-defeating terrorist acts - from the ax murders at the DMZ to the Rangoon bombing.

I Can't Take You Anywhere
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Average review score:

I take it EVERYWHERE!!
My daughter, who is prone to acts of clumsiness, delighted in this book. At an age where it seems her feet are struggling not to trip over themselves, she loved the fact that in the end...even grown-ups can "forget their feet"!! This book was a joy to read aloud; flowing beautifully. The illustrations were colourful and my daughter loved declaring aloud:"Amy Audrey I declare, I can't take you anywhere!" So much so, that it's become a catchphrase in our household!

DELIGHTFUL ILLUSTRATIONS MAKE THIS BOOK A JOY
Naylor's story is brought to life by Kaminsky's whimsicalillustrations. His style is refreshing. His expressive characters andexpert use of color make this book a delight to the eyes. Young children (and parents)will find the pictures of Audrey's mishaps hilarious. Every time you turn the pages you'll find something new to inspire a laugh.

Incoterms for Americans
Published in Paperback by International Projects (01 October, 1993)
Author: Frank J Reynolds
Average review score:

The Definitive Work
No sane person reads about INCO terms for fun, and if your work requires that you understand the details of international quotes & shipping then this is a required reference work. The author, who sat on the international drafting committee, is perhaps as knowledgable on this subject as any American. He also teaches an excellent seminar on the subject.

Technical topic made easy to understand
After I first read Mr. Reynold's predecessor book on Incoterms I felt I finally understood this technical topic. The new book, fully revised for Incoterms 2000, follows the same format. Each chapter is devoted to one of the 13 Incoterms so it can be easily digested. Each chapter contains an easy to read scenario of how the Incoterm may be used in a real international trade transaction and how it affects all other phases of the transaction including the ability or inability to collect payment.

The most valuable feature is the ending section of each chapter, entitled "American Perspective." It discusses how Americans should or should not use this particular term, or at least be aware of any caution flags.

Incoterms for Americans is a valuable commentary on an important topic.
